i was interested as to how a liquid inside a butane lighter could expand into the gas when struck?
any laws or theories mentioned would be great 
also, do you reckon the butane lighters could get water inside of them?

There is simple transformation of the same gas. When it is in lighter its liquid because of gas inside is under pressure when you press button to unlock container with liquid gas the pressure comes down and the liquid transform to gas because the difference between pressure in the lighter and pressure in the atmosphere.
