quantum entanglement real world application

physicsweb sent me an article a while back about successfully using two entangled photons as a sort of encryption key for a banking transaction.  I understand the spin-state dependence from one to the other, but I don't understand the nature of the crystal that they used to produce the entangled pair, and was hoping someone could enlighten me.

The article is at the following url:
http://physicsweb.org/articles/news/8/8/13/1

I highly recommend that anyone interested in current research in physics subscribe to their list, as it is very up to date, and gives summaries that are brief, yet informative enough to know if it is something you might want to read into further.

Thanks.

Re: quantum entanglement real world application

Did you also hear about Vlatko Vedral attributing mass to quantum entanglement?

Re: quantum entanglement real world application

The entire idea behind the Higgs field sounds a lot like the concept behind aether. I guess time will tell.

Anyway, if entaglement has something to do with mass then it's not a far stretch to describe dark matter via the same mechanism. But I'm still very skeptical about the idea of a Higgs boson, so it may be a while before I can accept mass-as-entanglement.

A non-linear crystal is any optical material that can be used to shorten the wavelength of incident light (same as increase the energy). I'm not sure what type of crystal they used. One of the most popular is LitO3.

Re: quantum entanglement real world application

Entanglement has alot of other implications in the world as well a recent article in New Scienctist is an example of this, how Entaglement can help along game theory. Read this:

http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/quant-ph/pdf/0208/0208069.pdf

I would like to see some other implentments of entanglement too. Any one got any links
