does infinity exist

I have never studied physics before but now i am conciouse again after fifteen years there is sompething that is giving me great concern.

1.
If infinity does exist then obviously there must be an infinate quantity of permutations of the particles that make up the space time continuum.
If this is true then there are many situations that are parralel,( parralel being a contradiction in  terms as i will explain). to ours.

I have not yet worked out how, but i am thinking at the moment, the human brain being configured as it is (or any other brain in fact ) is the one organisme within this realm at the moment capable of drawing on these other permutations in order to change the enviroment.
If this is not the case, then how is it that anything exists before we as a person know about it.
It seems to me that as the human race grows and there is ever more diversity in the way that people think, that the world that we live in becomes increasingly more diverse.
Take for example the fact that given a diverse crowd of people and a jar of jelly beans, if you ask them all how many beans there are in the jar, the chances are that not one will get the answer correct. But if you take the mean of the answers, you should have an extremely close estimate.
Why is it that the human race is only bound by its imagination.
As far as i can work out at the moment, the only thing that is anchoring us in this current state of reality is our inability to use most of our brain. But what would happen if we were capable of putting to work all of the atoms within our brain, maybe, we would no longer be bound to this reality and maybe we would be capable of drawing on all the other permutations that exist and being able to do exactly what we wish.
I am quite sure nobody will ever read this and if you do, think that i am a lunatic but these are just a fraction of the thoughts that i have that are linked to this little theory of mine and if you are reading this, please e mail me and put me streight.

Re: does infinity exist

At best, you are presenting a rambling opinion peppered with vague adjectives and qualifiers that has nothing at all to do with “infinity,” other than the fact that there likely is an infinite number of such opinions possible.

The truth is out there.

Re: does infinity exist

I don't understand how your "Jar of Beans" analogy applies to a growing and diverse humanity. An intelligent person can estimate the number of jelly beans given the volume of the jar. Statistics suggest that the mean of estimates made by many such smart people will come pretty darn close to the actual answer. This has nothing to do with diversity or infinity. Have 3 year olds guess and you're likely to find a much different answer.

No we do not use a large part of our brain at any given moment. We use it all, just not all at the same time. If we could, who knows.

I've moved this thread to Metaphysics, since it probably belongs there.

There i think lies your biggest mistake.  If you consider the end of the present universe to be the end of time thus disproving infinity, would everythin just start again should another universe be formed?

Also does this mean that there ever was a beggining.

I suggest you look at the theoriy that states that gravity will pull the universe into a singularity and then some time later errupt in another big bang creating a new universe.   (this could be found under theories to the end of the universe)

That may alter your perspective on things smile

Re: does infinity exist

It is difficult for me to base theories on theories; therefore, infinity exists, because we are still here...

Re: does infinity exist

Question: "Does Infinity exist?"

Answer: most likely, take what happens when you enter a black hole

A black hole is said to encompass the four dimensions of space and time, thus as a body approaches the event horizon, time is distorted due to the force of the acceleration, and force of the field. To an outside observer it would slow gradually, and along with it, wavelengths, although maintaining velocity, are red-shifted. As the body becomes even closer to the event horizon, time appears to stop. Strong tidal forces would cause the body to be ripped apart. Upon reaching the event horizon, the body would never be seen again, and is thought by scientists to race irreversibly towards the singularity, and become infinitely more dense.

Thats as close as you're gonna get to infinity in this particular universe. Of course one could argue that infinity exists through things like the big bang and big crucnh, but everyone else has spoken about this theory already, so im not going to was everyone's time repeating it.

Re: does infinity exist

What is infinity? I think the orginal poster needs to define terms first.

Re: does infinity exist

I'm rather confused trying to follow this thread.  "Infinity" is a mathematical concept, not a physical one.  Infinity is the concept of increasing without bound.  Infinity is not a number; it cannot be placed on the number line.  It is rather a statement about the unlimited growth of something.  We make statements like LaTeX Image.  This means that as we let x grow without bound, then LaTeX Image likewise grows without bound.  So, to me, it makes no sense to ask whether infinity exists, any more than it makes sense to ask "Does the number 2 exist?" or "Does the exponential function exist?"  These things are descriptions of tendencies created in the minds of humans.  They are pure ideas.

If the question is "is the size of the universe infinite," then that's a different issue, and we need to know what we mean by "universe."  If we mean "the total aggregation of all the matter in the universe," then we know that the "universe" as such is finite but expanding in size.  If instead we are asking about the limits of the geometry in which this matter is placed, then it is impossible to know what lies beyond the edge of the matter in the universe and whether a boundary exists somewhere, because the only way to find out would be to bring matter there, at which point it would not be outside the physical universe anymore.  To the best of my knowledge the geometrical models of our universe (the cosmological metrics) describe an infinite, four-dimensional manifold.

I hope I answered your question somewhere in there, alex.

Re: does infinity exist

What about life force, (ie prana/chi - whatever you want to call it). Infinite situations are hard to comprehend as we live in a somewhat finite environment- there are limits to many things. So to truly visualise something infinite is beyond our capabilities as humans...
