optics related art installation

I am trying to construct an installation for an art class. Conceptually, what I would like to accomplish is to be able to create a reflection of an image (that has been drawn on glass) on a container full of water.

I have been floundering for a while trying to position a light source in the back of the glass as to project the image on the water; however, only a the part of the image where the light bulb is directly behind is the part that works the best.  I feel that I am doing something wrong...

Also I was wondering if it would be better to have a dark container (so that light won't escape) or actually have a clear container and dilute white paint (so the image is actually on the surface and not on the bottom of the container).

HELP! I think there is a very obvious way of doing this and I am missing a key element, I just cannot think of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
