Non Ohmic!!

Hey friends....

You all know that V=IR (Ohm's law)
Also, in a superconductor, The resistence is 0 or R=0.
If we use this, then V=0 or there is no potential drop across the conductor then, if there is no potential difference then how can the current flow through the conductor?

If there is any misinterpretation by me... then please rectify it.

Re: Non Ohmic!!

When one measures the resistance of a superconductor by placing it in some electrical circuit, in series with a voltage source V (eg. battery), and measure the resulting current. If the resistance of the remaining circuit elements (such as the leads connecting the sample to the rest of the circuit, and the source's internal resistance) is R, the current passing through the sample is V/R. According to Ohm's law, this means that the resistance of the superconducting sample is zero.

Re: Non Ohmic!!

I am amused by the coincidence (is it coincidence or design?) that your name is Cooper, and the phenomenon of superconductivity is due to electrons in a material cohering to form "Cooper pairs."

Yes Professor, it certainly is by design and not by coincidence.... I like Superconductivity and hence the name Cooper.

Re: Non Ohmic!!

Alas, I am not a true professor; merely a senior undergrad student about to graduate (assuming my classes don't kill me first).  The title is an automatically-assigned value based on the number of posts I've made.  For a while it said "Post-doc"; that was rather flattering.  I hope to earn the title "Professor" in my own time, though.
