Linear Equation Help

A total of m matches is needed to fill 30 matchboxes with the same number of matches in each box.

a) How many matches are in each box?

b) If 3 fewer matches are put into each box, there are enough for 32 boxes. What is the value of m?

I think that for (a) the equation would be LaTeX Image....but i'm not sure. For (b), i have no idea what to do.

Re: Linear Equation Help

According to your value of LaTeX Image lets see: LaTeX Image

Re: Linear Equation Help

Well, without considering (b), then m can be anything that satisfies:

LaTeX Image

Which means m = 30, 60, 90, 120 ...

They should have asked the question in the reverse order, since you need to determine m before you can determine the answer to (a).

Ok. Look at the conditions you are given. First, you have 30 boxes filled with m matches. There are x number in each box. So:

LaTeX Image

Next, each box has 3 less (x-3) and a total of 32 boxes. So:

LaTeX Image

Therefore:

LaTeX Image
LaTeX Image

So initially, there are 48 matched in each box. So:

LaTeX Image

Re: Linear Equation Help

A train travels a certain journey and is supposed to arrive at midday. When its average speed is 40km/h,, it arrives at 1 p.m. When its average speed is 48km/h, it arrives at 11 a.m. What is the length of the journey?

I have no idea what to do for this one either.

Your question should be a new topic.
